Great Southern Wine Trails

Day 1
Perth to Mount Barker

Distance 410km - Driving Time 4 hours

Take the Kwinana Freeway from Perth to join the Albany Highway heading south through the Wheatbelt to Mount Barker, your first cellar door stop at the hub of the Great Southern Wine Region. An early start will get you here in time for a long lazy lunch overlooking the vineyards and stunning country panoramas.

Day 2
Mount Barker to Albany (via Porongurup)

Distance 75km - Driving Time 4 hours

If you’re touring in spring or early summer (September to December) it’s well worth taking the short detour east to stroll through one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots at Porongurup National Park. It’s a haven to some of Australia's most unique flora and fauna, including more than 100 species of birds and 750 varieties of plants that fill the park with a kaleidoscope of wildflower blooms. Choose from many trails in the park,including the breathtaking Granite Skywalk. 

From here, it’s just a 45-minute drive south to reach the historic city of Albany. In and among its charming heritage buildings and surrounding wineries, you’ll find refreshment at restaurants and taverns, and a wide range of camping and caravan parks to stay at. 

A weekend visit will bring a bonus treat from the iconic Albany Farmers' Markets, offering a taste of the region’s fresh and fabulous local flavours.

Day 3
Albany to Denmark

Distance 60km - Driving Time 45 mins

Follow the scenic southern coastline west to Denmark, wherethe tall timber southern forests meet the sea. From the centre of town, Scotsdale Tourist Drive leads into the rolling hills for a feast of local wines, arts and delicious produce, from cheeses and chocolate to marron and preserves.

An overnight stay in this romantic old timber milling town will also give you a taste of some country hospitality at the region's camping grounds and caravan parks. 

Day 4
Denmark to Perth

Distance 425km - Driving Time 5 hour

The journey back to Perth via Mount Barker, takes approximately five hours, giving you plenty of time to drop in to the wineries you missed on the way down. 

If you have more than three days to spare, why not extend your winery wander to Pemberton, Manjimup and the Margaret River wine regions, driving west from Denmark and stopping at the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk for a unique view of WA’s towering tingle trees.
