Why do people go to Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Track?
The big draw is the scenery. The track follows a clifftop and ridgeline above the ocean, revealing new angles with every turn. To the north lies the long arc of Pegasus Bay and, on clear days, the snowy outline of the Kaikoura Ranges.
To the west, you can peer into Lyttelton Harbour and trace the folded contours of Banks Peninsula. Down at your feet are sculpted cliffs and rocky platforms where waves surge and retreat. Photographers love the light here, especially early and late in the day when the sea turns silver and the cliffs glow.
Patient walkers sometimes spot Hector’s dolphins arcing just offshore, or a seal hauled out on a sun‑warmed rock. Keep your binoculars handy, move quietly, and you may be rewarded. The joy is that these encounters happen on a relaxed, family‑friendly loop without committing to a full day in remote terrain. Awaroa/Godley Head was a key coastal defence site during World War II, and you can wander among the old gun emplacements and structures that guarded the approaches to Lyttelton Harbour. Back closer to Taylors Mistake you also pass a row of quirky historic baches, simple seaside huts that speak to Christchurch’s holiday traditions. The combination of natural drama, wildlife, and heritage makes this walk as engaging as it is beautiful.
How long should I spend at Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Track?
It takes around 2.5-4 hours for the full loop at a relaxed pace. DOC lists the circuit at about 9.3 km and grades it as easy to intermediate.
The path is mostly well-formed and gravel underfoot with gentle gradients, and there is roughly 200 to 300 meters of total ascent spread across the loop. Most walkers with average fitness and sturdy footwear will find it comfortable, especially if you build in time for photos, wildlife watching, and exploring the World War II battery area on the headland.
If you are short on time, a popular out-and-back to the main battery lookout can be done in about 1.5 hours from the Summit Road side, while from Taylors Mistake it can take up to 2-3 hours return, depending on pace. Another option is to walk as far as Boulder Bay, enjoy the coastal vistas and the line of historic baches, then turn around. Whichever version you choose, bring water and a snack because there are no cafes and no reliable drinking taps on the loop itself. A popular way to finish is with a quick paddle or surf check at Taylors Mistake Beach.
How to get to Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Track
From central Christchurch: It’s around 16-20 km, typically 20 to 30 minutes by car, to the Taylors Mistake trailhead. Follow Ferry Road out toward Sumner, then continue along the coast over Scarborough and up Evans Pass. From the pass, descend to Taylors Mistake Beach, where the main trailhead and day car park sit beside the sand.
This is the most straightforward access point, with toilets at the beach car park and track signage at the start. Most interpretation panels are around the headland’s battery area.
Campervan tip: aim to arrive early, especially on weekends and during summer holidays, both to secure space for a longer vehicle at Taylors Mistake and to enjoy the first light on the cliffs. With a campervan, you have the flexibility to time your visit around weather windows and avoid the midday heat when the track is most exposed.

Time of day: Start early between 8 and 11 am if you want cooler conditions and quieter trails, or plan a late afternoon circuit that returns to Taylors Mistake in time for a beach sunset.
Weather in Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Track
Coastal Canterbury weather is famously changeable. Mornings can begin with patches of fog or low cloud that usually lift by midday, revealing blue skies and wide horizons. Sea breezes are common, and the headland is exposed to both local northeasterlies and the occasional Canterbury nor’wester. That airflow keeps temperatures comfortable in summer but can feel brisk on exposed ridges even on sunny days. Summers are relatively dry, often around 40 to 50 mm of rain per month on average, depending on location. Winter brings more frequent southerly changes and somewhat higher rainfall. Daytime summer temperatures are typically around 20-25°C, while winter days are cooler and wetter, especially when the wind shifts southerly.
Because conditions flip quickly here, dress with a flexible system in mind. Practical packing makes a big difference. Bring a windproof jacket and a warm layer, coupled with sun protection for your face and hands. Carry enough drinking water for the duration of your walk and a snack to keep your energy up. The track is exposed for long stretches and there is limited shelter, so prepare for wind and sun in equal measure.

The best base for the walk is Taylors Mistake car park, right beside the beach at the start of the loop. It is sealed, has toilets, and includes marked spaces that can accommodate longer vehicles. Day parking is free. Spaces can be limited at peak times, so plan to arrive early or later in the afternoon to sidestep the midday crowd.
Overnight stays are generally not permitted at the beach car park, so if you want to stay near the track, check local signage and book a campsite up on the headland. The Awaroa/Godley Head Department of Conservation campsite sits off Summit Road about 5 km from Taylors Mistake. It offers 25 non‑powered sites in a simple, scenic setting with big sky views. Advance booking is required here! For Britz travellers, this setup is ideal. Park at Taylors Mistake for your daytime walk, then cruise up to the campsite for a peaceful night on the peninsula. In the morning, you can drop back down for a beach coffee in Sumner before continuing your South Island road trip.
