How long should I spend at Nugget Point?

It’s one of the best spots for coastal views in NZ and an easy way to access some of the wild, remote beauty the Catlins New Zealand region is known for.

Best time to visit Nugget Point
Nugget Point is worth visiting year-round, but conditions can vary by season.
-
Summer (December – February): Warmest weather and best chance for clear skies.
-
Autumn (March – May): Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and great light for photography.
-
Winter (June – August): Windier and wetter, but still accessible and atmospheric.
-
Spring (September – November): Excellent for wildlife viewing — especially seal pups and seabirds nesting.
Sunrise is considered the best time to visit. The early light hits the cliffs and lighthouse beautifully, and you’ll share the track with fewer people — ideal for photos and quiet wildlife watching.
Weather at Nugget Point
The weather at Nugget Point is typical of an exposed coastal headland: cool, breezy, and changeable. Even in summer, daytime highs rarely exceed 20°C. Wind and rain are common, especially in winter, so pack a jacket and dress in layers. A windproof outer layer is recommended all year.
Best place to park your campervan at Nugget Point
The main car park at the end of The Nuggets Road is suitable for campervans. There’s enough space for turning and parking, though it can fill up during peak holiday periods. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon is a good way to avoid crowds and get the best spots.
