Why do people go to Pelorus Bridge?

Located in the beautiful Marlborough region of New Zealand, Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve is a popular natural spot known for its easy walks, crystal-clear swimming holes, and peaceful forest surroundings.

The Pelorus River itself has gained extra attention as a Hobbit filming location in New Zealand. Scenes for The Desolation of Smaug were shot in the gorge, adding to the area’s appeal for movie fans and nature lovers alike. Pelorus River kayaking tours are also a highlight, with guided paddles that let you glide through the same spectacular landscapes seen in the films.

For many, the draw is simply to unwind and take in the scenery, whether that’s along one of the easy Pelorus Bridge walks or parked up and relaxing at the family-friendly Pelorus Bridge DOC campground.

How long should I spend at Pelorus Bridge, Marlborough?

Most visitors spend 2 to 4 hours at Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, especially if they’re stopping for a short walk, swim, or picnic. However, if you’re planning to join a Pelorus River kayaking tour, explore multiple forest walks, or just want to relax at the riverside for the day, consider setting aside a full day. For those who want to truly soak in the tranquil forest setting, an overnight stay at the Pelorus Bridge DOC campground is a great way to extend your visit and enjoy the quiet evening atmosphere.

What is the history of the Pelorus River?

The Pelorus River, known as Te Hoiere in Māori, has long been an important waterway for local iwi. It provided transport routes, food, and cultural connection points, with its name linked to a chief of the Kurahaupō waka. European settlers later used the river for timber milling and transport, supporting early economic activity in the Marlborough region. Today, the river is recognised for its natural beauty and cultural significance, with conservation efforts in place to protect its clear waters and rich biodiversity.

How to get to Pelorus Bridge

Pelorus Bridge is conveniently located along State Highway 6, between Nelson and Havelock:

  • From Nelson: It’s about a 1-hour drive (56 km) heading southwest through rolling hills and farmland.

  • From Havelock: Just 20 minutes (21 km) northeast along SH6.

The entrance is well signposted and easy to find, making it a straightforward stop for those travelling by campervan or car.

Best time to visit Pelorus Bridge

The best time to visit Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve is late spring through early autumn (November to March). This is when the weather is warm and stable, perfect for Pelorus River swimming and kayaking or exploring the Pelorus Bridge walks. The surrounding forest is lush and green after spring rains, adding to the natural beauty of the area.

Winter (June – August) is cooler and often damp, making river activities less appealing. However, the forest can be particularly atmospheric in the misty winter light.

The best time of day to visit is mid-morning to early afternoon (around 10 am – 2 pm). You’ll get optimal lighting for photos, warm enough conditions for swimming and picnicking, and smaller crowds if you arrive before midday.

For a quieter experience and early birdwatching, consider arriving around 8–9 am before most day-trippers arrive.

Weather at Pelorus Bridge

The weather at Pelorus Bridge is typically mild and temperate, with warm summers and cool, damp winters. Rain is frequent year-round, which keeps the forest vibrant and the river flowing clear. Even in summer, be prepared for changeable weather with a light rain jacket or warm layer, especially if you’re planning to kayak or swim.
