Why do people go to the Peters Pool Walk?

The Peters Pool Walk is a popular short walk located in the Franz Josef Glacier region on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It offers visitors an easy walk through lush native rainforest filled with ferns and towering trees. The walk  leads to a small reflective kettle lake that’s known for its mirror-like views of the Southern Alps and distant Franz Josef Glacier viewpoints. Formed by glacial meltwater, the pool is a perfect spot to pause, take photos, and experience the beauty of this unique alpine landscape.

This track is often included in lists of family-friendly hikes in the South Island because it’s accessible and suitable for a range of fitness levels, with only gentle slopes and a well-maintained path. The walk is also an excellent example of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park walks. It’s also a great chance to experience the rainforest and glacial scenery that make this part of New Zealand so special. For visitors looking for a short, scenic outing near Franz Josef, the Peters Pool Walk is a must-see.
