How long should I spend at the Peters Pool Walk?
The track is a gentle 1.1 km return walk and takes around 20–25 minutes. Plan for 30–45 minutes overall to allow time to relax at the lake, soak up the views, and take photos. It’s an ideal short outing in the Franz Josef area.
Can you swim in Peters Pool?
No, swimming is not recommended in Peters Pool. This small kettle lake in Franz Josef is cold, shallow, and surrounded by delicate ecosystems. It’s best appreciated for reflection, photos, and quiet enjoyment of nature.
How to get to the Peters Pool Walk
From Franz Josef Glacier Village: About 3 km (5-minute drive or 30-minute walk). Drive south on SH6, turn onto Franz Josef Glacier Access Road, and follow it to the main car park.
From Fox Glacier: Drive north on SH6 for about 23 km (25 minutes). Turn right onto Franz Josef Glacier Access Road and follow it to the car park.
From Queenstown: A scenic 6–7 hour drive (350 km) via SH6 through Haast Pass.
The Peters Pool Walk begins from the Douglas Walk trailhead, located near the Franz Josef Glacier car park. It’s a great short walk to combine with other Westland Tai Poutini National Park walks.
Best time to visit Peters Pool
Spring (September – November): Lush greenery, mild weather, and fewer crowds.
Summer (December – February): Warm days, long daylight hours, and the busiest visitor period.
Autumn (March – April): Crisp air, vivid foliage, and fewer people.
Winter (June – August): Snowy peaks and atmospheric views, but be prepared for wet, cold weather and occasional road closures.
Visit early in the morning or late afternoon for calm water that creates beautiful mirror reflections. These times are also quieter, adding to the sense of peace and tranquillity.
Weather at Peters Pool
Expect cool, damp conditions year-round. The rainforest setting means frequent rain and mist, especially in winter and spring. Dress in layers and bring a waterproof jacket.
