Why visit the International Antarctic Centre?

The International Antarctic Centre is one of the most unique and immersive Christchurch attractions, offering a hands-on look into life on the frozen continent. Located just minutes from the airport, it’s a family-friendly, all-weather experience that combines education, adventure, and wildlife encounters — all under one roof.

From braving the indoor –8 °C Storm Room to riding in a Hägglund all-terrain vehicle, this award-winning destination is a hit with both kids and adults. Visitors also come to see the rescued little blue penguins and learn about Antarctica’s fragile ecosystems. Top experiences & exhibits

The centre is packed with interactive displays and memorable highlights. Top experiences include:

  • Penguin encounter Christchurch – Home to New Zealand’s largest colony of rescued little blue penguins, many with permanent injuries. Feeding times offer great photo opportunities and insights into their care.

  • Hägglund ride – Buckle up for a 15-minute ride in a genuine Antarctic vehicle across simulated crevasses, icy slopes, and water traps — a safe but thrilling taste of off-road Antarctic travel.

  • 4D Antarctic experience – A short film enhanced with seat rumbles, wind blasts, water spray, and snow effects for a multi-sensory Antarctic journey.

  • Scott Base gallery & Storm Room – Walk through life-sized replicas, feel the chill in the storm room, and explore modern Antarctic research.

  • Behind-the-scenes tours – Optional upgrades like the Penguin Backstage Pass give access to off-exhibit care areas and expert-led talks.

  • Husky Zone – Meet and pat friendly huskies while learning about their role in Antarctic history.

How long to allow for your visit

Plan to spend 2–3 hours at the Antarctic Centre Christchurch to enjoy the main exhibits, including the Hägglund ride and penguin viewing. If you’ve booked a backstage tour or want to take your time with displays and café breaks, allow closer to 4 hours.

Best time to visit (season & time of day)

  • Season: The centre is open year-round (9 am – 4:30 pm) and is especially popular on wet or cold days.

  • Time of day: Arrive at opening (9 am) for smaller crowds, quieter penguin feedings, and early Hägglund ride slots.

  • School holidays: Afternoons tend to be the busiest, so pre-book International Antarctic Centre tickets online to avoid queues.

Weather in Christchurch vs inside the Centre

Christchurch generally has mild weather — summer highs reach around 22 °C, while winter averages 11 °C. Inside the centre, however, the Storm Room can hit –8 °C. Layering is key, especially if you’re visiting during a seasonal transition or coming straight from the campervan.

What to pack & practical tips

  • Cameras are welcome, but be mindful of condensation and wind-blast areas.

  • The centre is fully wheelchair accessible, with wide paths and ramps.

  • Lockers are available on-site for $2 (coin-operated).

Campervans can park in the large free car park on Orchard Road, shared with Spitfire Square. It’s suitable for vehicles up to 7 m long and provides easy accessto the centre’s entrance. Overnight stays are not permitted, but it's ideal for day visits.
