Guide to Lennox Head Boardwalk

People visit the coastal walk at Lennox Head for its dramatic headland views and encounters with wildlife. From the timber pathway, you can look straight down to turquoise surf rolling into Seven Mile Beach, scan for turtles and dolphins, or climb the short spur track to the famous Pat Morton Lookout for 360-degree views of the Pacific. In winter and spring (May to November), this becomes one of the easiest places on the east coast for whale watching in Lennox Head, with humpbacks breaching just offshore. 

It’s not only about the ocean, though. The boardwalk forms part of the longer Lennox Point walk, linking grassy headlands, picnic spots, and the township’s beachside parks. Plus, families love the boardwalk for its easy gradient and safe railings, while photographers and nature lovers are easily won over by the sunrise light, dolphin pods, and the annual humpback migration. Add in nearby cafés, surf breaks, and parks, and you’ve got a classic stop on any New South Wales coastal road trip. 

How long should I spend at Lennox Head Boardwalk?

Because the trail is short and well-maintained, most people take around 30–60 minutes to stroll the Lennox Head Boardwalk at a relaxed pace. That’s plenty of time for photos, a breather at Pat Morton Lookout, and a bit of dolphin spotting. If you’re here during whale season or you simply want to linger over a coffee and enjoy the views, allow 1.5–2 hours. With playgrounds and grassy parks nearby, it’s easy to make this a half-day outing if you’re travelling with kids. 

Is Lennox Head on the Seven Mile Beach?

Yes! The township of Lennox Head sits right at the southern end of the legendary Seven Mile Beach, which stretches north toward Broken Head. This huge expanse of sand is popular for surfing, fishing, horse rides and beach walks, and it’s easy to combine a stroll along the shore with a clifftop wander on the boardwalk.  

How to get to Lennox Head Boardwalk

From Brisbane, the drive to Lennox Head is about 185 km (2.5 hours). Head south on the Pacific Motorway (M1), cross into New South Wales, and follow signs for Ballina/Wollongbar. Once in Lennox Head, follow local signs to the Boardwalk/Pat Morton Lookout area on The Coast Road. 

From Byron Bay, it’s just a 20 km drive (around 20 minutes). Travel south on the Pacific Highway/local roads toward Lennox Head and follow the foreshore signs to access the boardwalk from either the town centre or the lookout. 

The roads are sealed and easy for campervans, though weekends and school holidays can mean heavier traffic, so plan a little extra time if you’re on a schedule. 

Best time to visit Lennox Head Boardwalk

Best time of year to visit: The boardwalk is open and beautiful year-round, but the May–November whale migration (and the ensuing whale watching in Lennox Head) makes this stretch of coast especially magical. Spring and autumn bring mild conditions ideal for walking, while summer gives you long daylight hours for extended beach and headland exploring. 

Best time of the day to visit: Early mornings reward you with soft light, cooler air and a peaceful atmosphere for your scenic walk on the NSW coast. Late afternoons are spectacular too, with the headland glowing in golden light as the sun sets behind the hinterland. If you’re into photography, plan for either sunrise or sunset for the best shots. 

Weather at Lennox Head Boardwalk

The Lennox Head Boardwalk enjoys a mild subtropical climate year-round. Summer temperatures average 20–28 °C with refreshing sea breezes, while spring and autumn hover around 16–26 °C. Even in winter, daytime temperatures are a comfortable 10–20 °C, making this one of the family-friendly walks in Lennox Head you can do in any season. Occasional showers can pass quickly, so a light rain jacket is handy if you’re visiting outside of summer. 

Best place to park your campervan at Lennox Head Boardwalk

Travelling in a campervan? There are several convenient parking options. The Pat Morton Lookout car park on The Coast Road has a dedicated area right at the base of the lookout, perfect if you’re starting at the top. There’s also free street parking around Ross Park, giving easy access to the boardwalk walkways. Ballina Street Beachside Park has free parking and picnic areas and is just a short stroll from the beach and the boardwalk’s starting point. All are suitable for campervans during the day; however, in busy periods, it’s worth arriving early to secure a space.
