Why visit Monkey Mia
Monkey Mia is best known for its wild dolphin experience. For decades, bottlenose dolphins have visited the shoreline here, and today the experience is carefully managed by rangers to protect the dolphins while allowing visitors to see them up close.
The dolphins are wild, so sightings are never guaranteed. However, Monkey Mia remains one of the best places in Australia to see dolphins from the beach. The experience is calm, educational and focused on conservation, with only a small amount of fish offered so the dolphins continue to hunt naturally.
Beyond the dolphins, Monkey Mia is a great base for exploring Shark Bay, also known as Gathaagudu, one of Western Australia’s UNESCO World Heritage areas. The region is known for seagrass meadows, dugongs, stromatolites, shell beaches, red cliffs, turquoise water and rich marine life.
For campervan travellers, the appeal is simple. Monkey Mia is easy to reach by sealed road, has a beachfront campground, and sits close to Denham and several of Shark Bay’s best natural attractions.
Best things to do at Monkey Mia
Monkey Mia is a relaxed coastal stop, but there is plenty to do if you want to stay longer than the morning dolphin experience. It is also a useful base for exploring the wider Shark Bay region.
Some of the best things to do include:
Join the Monkey Mia dolphin experience: The Monkey Mia Dolphin Experience is the main reason many travellers visit. Dolphins may come close to shore between 7.45am and midday, with rangers offering a small amount of fish during up to three visits. Arrive early, follow ranger instructions and remember that the dolphins choose whether to visit.
Relax on the beach: Monkey Mia’s beach is calm and easy to enjoy after the morning dolphin experience. It is a good place for a swim, a walk, a picnic or a quiet few hours beside the water.
Take a wildlife cruise: A Monkey Mia wildlife cruise is a great way to see more of Shark Bay’s marine environment. Depending on the season and conditions, you may see dolphins, dugongs, turtles, rays, sea snakes, seabirds and other marine life.
Look for dugongs and marine life: Shark Bay is home to one of the world’s largest populations of dugongs, along with dolphins, rays, turtles, sharks and fish. Boat tours and lookouts are some of the best ways to spot wildlife responsibly.
Visit Denham: The seaside township Denham is close to Monkey Mia and a practical stop for fuel, groceries, cafés and local services. It is also a good base if you want to explore more of Shark Bay.
Explore Shell Beach: One of Shark Bay’s most unusual landscapes, Shell Beach has a shoreline made up of tiny white shells. It is an easy stop on the drive into or out of Monkey Mia.
Stop at Eagle Bluff: Eagle Bluff has a boardwalk with views over shallow water where you may spot rays, sharks, turtles and other marine life from above.
Visit the Hamelin Pool stromatolites: The Hamelin Pool stromatolites are among the oldest living organisms on Earth. They are an important part of Shark Bay’s World Heritage story and well worth adding to your route.
