The Journey

Days

1 2 3 4 5 6

Day 1
Adelaide to Whyalla

Distance 386km - Driving Time 4hrs

Today was a big driving day to reach our first destination on the Eyre Peninsula. We ended the day with a magnificent sunset at Whyalla. We loved our campsite right on the water at Discovery Parks Whyalla.

Day 2
Whyalla to Lincoln National Park

Distance 296km - Driving Time 3hrs 20min

Today we took a leisurely scenic drive down the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula, first checking the Point Lowly Lighthouse and then stopping at the beautiful beaches of Arno Bay, Port Neill and Tumby Bay. Port Lincoln was chosen as our base for three nights to explore the surrounding area.

What a treat the Lincoln National Park is! We spent the day exploring the beautiful beaches and enjoying a short walk up to Stamford Hill with exquisite views of Port Lincoln, nearby islands and the stunning coastline of the harbour. We enjoyed sampling the local seafood with a dinner of barbecue tuna and fresh oysters purchased from local suppliers.

On our fourth day, we had the most amazing experience swimming with sea lions off an island near Port Lincoln. They are such playful and curious animals and love coming up to swim with you. We finished off the day with a lovely sunset from Winters Hill Lookout.

Day 3
Port Lincoln to Port Augusta via Elliston

Distance 513km - Driving Time 5hrs 24

Today we left Port Lincoln to explore the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula. We started in Coffin Bay with a visit to the National Park and a tour of Pure Coffin Bay Oysters, which included a sampling of what have to be the best oysters I’ve ever tasted. It was a fascinating tour. We loved the wild coastline of the east coast, especially Leo Cummings Monument, Locks Well and the spectacular Great Ocean Drive at Elliston. We camped here the night. The sunsets are not to be missed.

We ended our time on the Eyre Peninsula with a short headland walk at the picturesque Venus Bay before the long drive to Port Augusta where we stayed for the evening.

Day 4
Port Augusta to Wilpena Pound

Distance 161km - Driving Time 1hr 53min

Today we arrived in Flinders Ranges National Park, which was a highlight of our trip. The scenery is stunning and timeless. We enjoyed the short Drought Busters walk and the emus roaming around our motorhome. In the evening we joined a sunset tour at Stokes Hill Lookout. An Outback sunset with a glass of champagne (or two) – who wouldn’t be in heaven?

We experienced the following areas on the Time Travel and Gorgeous Gorges tours from Wilpena Pound Resort. Jimmy, our guide, gave a wonderful and thorough insight into the area and his culture. We explored a corridor of time tracing more than 100 million years of geological history into the Bunyeroo Canyon and Brachina Gorge. It was a half-day tour, which included a yummy cake, and a morning tea break in the gorge with strawberries and cream. In the afternoon, we went for a two-hour walk into Wilpena Pound for some gorgeous views into this sacred site.

Day 5
Adelaide via Sacred Canyon

Distance 470km - Driving Time 5hrs 27min

Today we visited Sacred Canyon with our indigenous guide Terence who showed us the ancient petroglyphs on the canyon walls and explained their meaning. He also taught us how to make art from stones and mend a weapon with sap from the tree. In the afternoon we visited the old Wilpena Station for a look into pastoral and indigenous history in the area.

We finished our amazing South Australian journey with a long drive back to Adelaide.
