Why visit Simpsons Gap
Simpsons Gap is one of the most accessible attractions in Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park. Located west of Alice Springs, it gives visitors a striking introduction to the red cliffs, dry creek beds, ghost gums and desert landscapes that make the West Macs such a memorable part of Central Australia.
The gap itself has been carved through the range by Roe Creek, creating a narrow opening between high rock walls. At the base is a permanent waterhole, which is an important refuge for local wildlife. Swimming is not permitted, but the waterhole and shaded gorge make this a peaceful place to walk, take photos and slow down.
Simpsons Gap also sits within a culturally significant landscape. Tjoritja is important to the Western Arrernte people, and visitors are asked to respect the area, follow signs, stay on marked tracks and leave plants, rocks and wildlife undisturbed.
For campervan travellers, the appeal is its ease. You can drive to Simpson Gap from Alice Springs in under 30 minutes, combine it with other nearby Northern Territory attractions, or include it as an early stop on a longer Red Centre road trip.
Best things to do at Simpsons Gap
Simpsons Gap is a relaxed and easy attraction to explore. Most visitors come for the short walk to the waterhole, but there are a few different ways to enjoy the area if you have more time.
Some of the best things to do include:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/australia/northern-territory/simpsons-gap-waterhole
Walk to Simpsons Gap waterhole: The main Simpsons Gap walking trail is short and easy at around 30 minutes to an hour, leading from the car park to the gap and permanent waterhole. It is the best way to see the cliffs up close and enjoy the quiet of the gorge.
Look for black-footed rock-wallabies: Simpsons Gap is one of the better-known places near Alice Springs to look for black-footed rock-wallabies. The best times are usually early morning or late afternoon, when they may appear among the rocks.
Explore the short walking trails: There are several short walks in the area, including the Cassia Hill Walk and the Woodland Trail. These tracks pass desert plants, ghost gums and range views, offering a good introduction to the landscapes of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
Cycle the Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path: The Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path is a sealed 17 km one-way path from near Flynn’s Grave to Simpsons Gap. It is suitable for confident riders and is best tackled in the cooler part of the day.
Visit at dawn or dusk: Early morning and late afternoon are excellent times to visit. The light on the cliffs is softer, temperatures are cooler and wildlife viewing can be better.
Add it to a West Macs day trip: Simpsons Gap pairs easily with other nearby stops such as Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek Big Hole and Ormiston Gorge. It is a great first stop if you are heading west from Alice Springs.
Best time to visit Simpsons Gap
The best time to visit Simpsons Gap is during the cooler months, generally from April to September. This is when daytime temperatures are more comfortable for walking, cycling and exploring the wider West MacDonnell Ranges.
As a guide:
April to May: Warm but generally more comfortable than summer, with good conditions for short walks and longer Red Centre travel days.
June to August: One of the most popular times to visit Central Australia. Days are usually mild, nights can be cold, and conditions are better for walking and sightseeing.
September to October: Still a good time to visit, but daytime temperatures start to rise. Plan walks and bike rides for early morning.
November to March: Summer can be very hot. Visit early, avoid strenuous activity in the heat of the day and carry plenty of water.
If you are planning the Larapinta Trail or a longer West Macs itinerary, check seasonal advice carefully, as heat can make hiking unsafe.
